Ramzan
Kadyrov has been the President of Chechnya since 2007. Russia has
many republics under its sovereignty. Ramzan is the son of Akhmat
Kadyrov, the leader of a militia that changed allegiance in 1999 from
the Chechen rebels to the Russians. After his father's 2004
assassination, Russian media suggested that Vladimir Putin supported
Ramzan as his successor for the presidency. However, Ramzan was not
yet the minimum age for the Chechen presidency.
As
president, Kadyrov has largely stopped the chronic conflict that had
devastated the region and has begun the process of revitalization.
However, he has also attracted the attention of human rights groups
both locally and around the world for allegedly having ordered
kidnappings, torture, and assassinations of both rivals and
journalists critical of his policies. He has also implemented
components of Islamic law, restricting the production of alcohol and
requiring women to wear headscarves.
