Najib
Mikati has been the Prime Minister of Lebanon since June 2011. A
billionaire, he made his fortune from the telecom company he founded
during the Lebanese Civil War. A member of Parliament for several
years, he was appointed interim Prime Minister for three months in
2005 amid the fallout from Rafik Hariri's assassination and Syria's
subsequent exit from Lebanon; his cabinet was mostly technocrats, and
he did not stand in the 2005 elections.
While
Mikati is a family friend of Bashar al-Assad, he is widely considered
a moderate. Although he has drawn criticism for accepting
Hezbollah's support to become Prime Minister, he insists that he
remains neutral and committed to dialogue. While Hezbollah seeks to
end the international Tribunal investigating the Hariri
assassination, it remains ongoing, and Mikati has not publicly sought
to bring it to an end, instead ensuring that Lebanon paid its dues to
the Tribunal.
