The
Baha'i Faith was founded in the 19th century by Baha'u'llah in
present-day Iran. A monotheistic faith, it claims to fulfill the
prophecies of faiths such as Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism.
Baha'u'llah claimed be the most recent in a line of divine messengers
including Muhammad, Jesus, and the Buddha, among others; the
possibility remains that another messenger could become manifest.
The Baha'i Faith has adherents living throughout the world.
Baha'is
have endured persecution throughout their history; Baha'u'llah and
his family were imprisoned for many years, as are many Baha'is in
Iran today. In Egypt, it can be very difficult for Baha'is to obtain
the national identity card. Baha'is especially work toward the unity
of the human race, eschewing divisions caused by religion, race,
politics, or other causes. Since the death of Baha'u'llah's
great-grandson, the Faith has been led by a panel of nine believers
elected to five-year terms.
