Abd
Rabbuh Mansur al-Hadi has been the vice president of Yemen since 1994
and its acting president since Ali Abdullah Saleh's resignation in
November 2011. A former soldier, he rose to the rank of General
before serving as Minister of Defence and soon after becoming vice
president. Originally from South Yemen, he was a key southern ally
to Saleh, a Zaidi Shia from the North.
When
Saleh was injured during a rocket attack amid the Arab Spring in June
2011, al-Hadi became acting president for over three months while
Saleh received medical treatment in Saudi Arabia, a role he resumed
upon Saleh's resignation. While he is running uncontested in Yemen's
February 2012 elections, these elections have received broad support,
including key backing from the ruling party and from the protesters.
Many Yemenis hope the elections can begin a new, post-Saleh chapter
in their country's history.
