Abdelilah Benkirane
has been the Prime Minister of Morocco since his appointment by King Mohammed VI after elections in November 2011. Elections were held a
year earlier than scheduled because of reforms enacted amid the Arab
Spring. Benkirane leads the winning Islamist Justice and Development
Party. The recent reforms mandate that the king pick the Prime
Minister from the winning party; as the party's leader, Benkirane was
an obvious choice and also because of his royalist leanings.
Formerly a
socialist, Benkirane has espoused Islamist politics for many years.
He is a moderate Islamist, promising to avoid confronting
controversial issues like headscarves or alcohol. Upon his
appointment to the Prime Ministry, he vowed to focus on eliminating
corruption, a serious problem in Morocco, where most power rests in
the hands of the King. He is also committed to reforming education
in an attempt to curb the nation's high unemployment rate.
