Mohammed bin Rashid
Al Maktoum has been the vice-president of the United Arab Emirates
and Ruler of Dubai since his brother Maktoum's death in 2006. He
also serves as the nation's Minister of Defence. Immensely wealthy
from oil profits, his philanthropy includes the building of mosques
around the world and an initiative to prevent blindness. He also
owns many horses that compete in races around the world and is known
in the region for his poetry.
As
ruler of Dubai, Mohammed has overseen the construction of the world's
highest skyscraper and man-made islands in the Persian Gulf, and his
fortune has also softened the impact of the global recession on
Dubai's real estate market. During the Arab Spring protests of 2011,
he spoke out in support of the protests overall, but clamped down on
any hint of protest within the UAE, leading to the arrest of several
bloggers.
